Cynthia Guyer is a Senior Advisor to Global Dignity, where she previously served as the organisation’s first Executive Director from 2017 to 2021. Before joining Global Dignity, Guyer served as the first Director of External Affairs at the Rubin Museum of Art, in New York City, where she was responsible for leading its first strategic plan, rebranding, internal and external communications, as well as recruiting and engaging the museum’s Board. She also helped establish a permanent endowment of $120 million. Guyer began her career working in the American South on civil rights and the renewal of rural communities. Her first job was at the Highlander Center, one of the most important gathering places during the Civil Rights Movement for leaders, activists, musicians, and artists. She later joined Highlander’s Board, with the honour of serving with Rosa Parks and Septima Clark, who started the legendary Freedom Schools throughout the South. She founded the Portland (Oregon) Schools Foundation, an NGO she led for 12 years, building a diverse coalition of parents, teachers, leaders of youth and minority organisations, business, and elected leaders. The organisation won seven successive campaigns raising $850 million in public tax dollars for the state’s largest and most diverse school system.
