Kaiser Bengali

Economist, Researcher & Policy Adviser

Kaiser Bengali is an economist with over 40 years of experience in teaching, research, and policy advising both in Pakistan and internationally. In Pakistan, he has taught and conducted research at institutions like the Applied Economics Research Centre (AERC), Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI), and Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science & Technology (SZABIST). He also served as Managing Director of the Social Policy & Development Centre (SPDC) in Karachi. Internationally, he has worked with the Graduate Institute of Development Studies, University of Geneva, the University of Sussex, and various organisations in Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Eritrea, and Kenya.

Mr Bengali’s research interests include planning and development, macro-economic and fiscal policies, poverty, unemployment, social justice, urban and regional planning, and issues related to decentralisation and local government. He has held government positions such as Head of the Chief Minister’s Policy Reform Unit in Balochistan, Adviser for Planning & Development in Sindh, and the first head of the Benazir Income Support Programme. He also represented Sindh on the 7th National Finance Commission.

With over 50 research publications and nine books, Bengali is a regular contributor to newspapers and media on economic and political issues. He holds a Master’s in Economics from Boston University and a PhD from the University of Karachi.
