Fauzia Viqar

Chairperson, The Punjab Commission on Status of Women

Ms Fauzia Viqar specialises in women’s empowerment with a focus on legislative and policy advocacy and community development. With over 15 years of professional and voluntary work with government and civil society organisations in Pakistan and abroad, Ms Viqar is recognised for her expertise in gender-based and racial discrimination and promotion of women’s empowerment. Ms Viqar was appointed the first Chairperson of Punjab Commission on the Status of Women. She is currently working on legislative, policy and programme review and institutional support for women in Punjab. Previously, as Director Advocacy and Communications at Shirkat Gah Women’s Resource Centre, Ms Viqar contributed actively towards policy and legal reforms on issues of domestic violence, prevention of child marriages, local government and expansion in women’s shelters across Pakistan. She has alos worked with the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services, Human Rights Division, Government of Canada, to prevent race and sex based discrimination. Ms Viqar holds a Master’s degree in Political Science from McMaster University, Canada and an MSc International Relations from Quaid-i-Azam University, Pakistan.
