Nigar Nazar

Cartoonist

Nigar Nazar is Pakistan’s first female cartoonist and the first in the Muslim world. She created her iconic cartoon character, Gogi, nearly five decades ago. A bold, humorous young woman unafraid to speak her mind—first appeared in a local newspaper, becoming Pakistan’s pioneering comic strip character. Symbolising the empowered Pakistani woman, Gogi addressed social and political issues with wit, gaining wide recognition across countries, including Turkey, Australia, the UK, and beyond.

Ms Nazar’s work has been instrumental in advocating for women’s rights and social causes. She received the Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah Award in 2005 and was named among the BBC’s '100 Global Women Making a Difference' in 2014. In 2023, she was honoured with Pakistan’s Civil Award, the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, and showcased her work on climate change by designing bus wraps for the Australian High Commission.

Through Gogi Studios, Ms Nazar has created awareness on women’s empowerment, child safety, and environmental health. She has authored and illustrated 31 children’s books, addressed mental health for children during the pandemic through her YouTube series “Happy Hands,” and holds the distinction of being a twice Fulbright Scholar and founding member of the Asian Youth Association for Animators and Cartoonists.
