Dr Sabieh Anwar
Professor of Physics & Former Dean, Syed Babar Ali School of Science & Engineering, LUMS
Dr Muhammad Sabieh Anwar is a Professor of Physics and former Dean at the LUMS Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering, Pakistan’s leading science and engineering institution. A founding member of the School, he played a central role in establishing its experimental facilities, developing its curriculum, and launching physics at LUMS. His pioneering physics instructional laboratories, PhysLab, have been replicated across ten universities in Pakistan, and his innovative teaching tools, centred on insightful, home-grown experiments, continue to influence science education nationwide. He is also the co-founder of Qosain Scientific, the company behind the PhysLogger and other scientific instruments, and recently launched Astrolab, an astronomy laboratory for the developing world.
Dr Sabieh’s research spans spintronics, magnetism and optics, with around 100 publications in leading international journals including Science, the Physical Review series, Optics Express, Journal of the American Chemical Society, and PNAS. His book on tabletop quantum mechanics experiments with single photons (second edition) is published by the Institute of Physics (UK). He is a recipient of the TWAS Medal in Physics (2008) and the National Innovation Prize (2015), and serves on advisory boards of multiple Pakistani universities. He serves as General Secretary of the Khwarizmi Science Society, where he leads large-scale public science engagement initiatives such as the Lahore Science Mela.
Before joining LUMS in 2007, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at UC Berkeley and a PhD at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar.
