Somayeh Bardai

CEO, Raana Liaquat Craftsmen’s Colony (RLCC)

Somayeh Bardai oversees the Raana Liaquat Craftsmen’s Colony (RLCC), a women’s empowerment organisation that supports over 20,000 beneficiaries annually. It includes a school with 750 children, a polyclinic serving 12,000 patients, a vocational training department for 1,000 trainees, a livelihoods department supporting over 250 home-based craftswomen, and an outreach team that raises awareness among 13,000 community members.

Ms Bardai has taught photography at the Textile Institute of Pakistan and the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture. She collaborated with Save the Children and the IKEA Foundation to combat child labour, managed vocational training at Behbud Karachi, and served as assistant curator at Mohatta Palace Museum.

Her journey in design intervention began in 1999 in Quetta, where she documented the fading embroideries of Balochistan. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the American University in Dubai and studied photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York, later joining the Master of Design programme at the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Delhi.
