Uzma Noorani

Social Activist and Former Co-chairperson, Human Rights Commission of Pakistan

Uzma Noorani is a dedicated social activist with over 30 years of experience in furthering the cause of human rights in Pakistan. Her areas of interest include women’s political participation and preventing violence against women. She was an active member of the National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW), to which she was nominated from Sindh. Her expertise on policies and legislation and her understanding of women's issues has helped her make significant contributions to review laws as a member of NCSW’s legal committee with her ability of engaging with diverse stakeholders, including policy-makers, politicians, the judiciary, and rights activists. From 2017 to 2020, Noorani served as the co-chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan and also represented it on the International Federation for Human Rights. She has been at the forefront of assisting and lobbying for women’s rights in Pakistan, is also a member of South Asians for Human Rights (SAHR), and is amongst the founding members of Women’s Action Forum (WAF) and also the Founding Trustee of PANAH.
