Rashid Rana is one of Pakistan’s most celebrated artists, and is widely considered one of the leading artists of his generation in South Asia today. Initially trained as a painter, he is now famous for pioneering new media art from Pakistan and is celebrated for his ideas, imagery and pictorial strategies, working in dramatically different modes such as paintings, stainless steel sculptures, video installation, photo-sculptures and photo mosaics. He gained international acclaim for creating the mesmerizing exterior of the Pakistan Pavilion at the World Expo, Dubai and in 2022, received the Sitara-i-Imtiaz from the President of Pakistan. Amongst his various international accolades, is the Excellence in Art award as part of ‘Pakistan Power 100’ event in London (2013), International Artist of the Year Award by SVAC (2003) and the Game Changer Asia Art Award by the Asia Society (2017). Rana has shown extensively at various public and private institutions all over the world including Venice Biennale; Mohatta Palace Museum, Karachi; Singapore Art Museum; Hong Kong Art Center, Cornerhouse Manchester; Musee Guimet Paris' Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane; Fotomuseum Winterthur; Whitechapel Gallery London; Lower Belvedere Vienna; and Asia Society Museum, New York. Parallel to his art career, Rana has been associated with academia for the last two decades and is a founding faculty member and Dean of the School of Visual Arts and Design at the Beaconhouse National University, Lahore.
