Sheema Kermani

Ms Sheema Kermani is a prominent theatre practitioner and activist for women’s rights and peace. She is also a trained classical dancer, choreographer and dance teacher. Ms Kermani has spent many years working as a political activist. In 1979, Ms Kermani founded Tehrik-e-Niswan (Women’s Movement), a cultural action group that works to create greater awareness about women’s rights and promotes art and culture. The group has mounted over 100 productions and over a 1000 performances, some of which have been landmarks in the history of Pakistan’s theatre. Ms Kermani has acted in and directed many of these plays. Besides acting on the stage, she has also acted in a number of popular TV plays and serials. She has taught courses on culture at National College of Arts, SZABIST University and Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture. In 2005, Ms Kermani was nominated as one of the “1000 Peace Women from across the Globe” for the Nobel Peace Prize.
