Rumana Husain

Author, Illustrator

Trained as a graphic designer, Ms Rumana Husain has taught art, worked as an innovative school head, is a teacher-trainer, a book illustrator, a writer and a journalist. Ms Husain is the author of two books on Karachi, ‘Karachiwala: A Subcontinent Within a City’ and ‘Street Smart: Professionals on the Street’. She has written and illustrated over 60 children’s books and has developed numerous teachers’ manuals for publishers including the Oxford University Press, Danesh Publications, ERDC, Kathalya Publications (Nepal), Nami Children’s Books (South Korea), Butterfly Works (The Netherlands), Pratham Books (India) and the Bookgroup, which she co-founded in Karachi in 1988. She co-founded NuktaArt - a biannual art magazine, published for 10 years, of which she was senior editor. Ms Hussain worked as Activism and Outreach Head at the Children’s Museum for Peace and Human Rights from 2001 to 2008 and taught at and headed the CAS School from 1986 to1996. Ms Husain is an Honorary Director on the Board of the Children’s Literature Festival (CLF), Honorary General Secretary of the Karachi Conference Foundation and Founding Member Board of Governors, Society for ‘I Am Karachi’.
